On the nature of heteropolis: revisiting the post-Yugoslav urban bricolage

Sonja Lakić, architecte, urbaniste, est actuellement chercheuse postdoctorale Marie Skłodowska-Curie / EUTOPIA-SIF à CY Cergy Paris Université, invitée du laboratoire PLACES.

Understanding the cities of the former Yugoslavia would inevitably start by evoking the post-socialist label and involve rather conventional methods, aiming to reach a consensus regarding the post-1990s urban transformation. What happens when the process of dismantling the socialist legacy is portrayed through the eyes of privatised apartments? What can one learn from rearrangement of furniture and/or personal taste and aspirations adopted as "a significant landscape management canon" (Czepczyński, 2008)? This lecture introduces the post-Yugoslav complexity and portrays the everydayness of cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro through the lenses of "heteropolitanization" (Gentile et al., 2012).

This testimonial on the contemporary practice of everyday life alters between different scales and introduces a wide variety of rather controversial practices of appropriation and production of space. Bringing together different disciplines, such as architecture, urban anthropology, urban sociology and cultural geography, the lecture visits the lives of places and those that (re)shape, (re)make, contest and appropriate them on daily basis. This is a call for more of an understanding of human lives, powered by biographical micro-narratives and unconventional ethnography conducted behind the closed doors of personal homes, accidental ethnography and urban flâneur experience, as well as diverse media.
